Undersheriff Larry Roland
Undersheriff Larry Roland began his police career in 1972 as a police cadet with the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department. For the next 2 ½ years he worked several assignments within the department and attended college prior to becoming a commissioned officer in 1974.
Being from a family that was not only spiritually sound, he was taught the benefit of taking care of family, and education. Obtaining a college degree was not an option and received his undergraduate degree from Wichita State University, and Park University in Kansas City.
As a patrol officer with the police department, Undersheriff Roland worked various details such as patrol, air support division (helicopter), Special Weapons and Tactics, and accident investigation.
In the summer of 1981 Undersheriff Roland was offered and accepted employment with the Kansas Highway Patrol. He remained with the Highway Patrol until he retired January 1, 2006 after achieving the rank of Master Trooper. As a state trooper, he had area assignments of Leavenworth, Wichita, and Kansas City. During his employment he received many accolades for DUI enforcement, criminal apprehension, and community service.
As a state trooper he was a much sought after trainer and speaker regarding the subject of Street Gangs after receiving his initial training with the Los Angeles, California Police Department CRASH (Community Resources Against Street Hoodlums), and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s OSS (Operation Safe Streets). Undersheriff Roland also became an instructor in Special Weapons and Tactics and has been an adjunct instructor in several schools. He also maintains a membership in several tactical associations, and is noted for his networking ability.
After 3 years in retirement, Roland was offered the position of Undersheriff from the newly elected Wyandotte County Sheriff, Don Ash, a close friend and co-worker for over thirty five years.
Undersheriff Roland is very active in his church, which he holds the title of Trustee Chairman, and can be seen out with his family along with the four grandchildren. He is an active member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated. He also enjoys reading, and is the family historian maintaining the family scrapbook and family tree.
During the many visits with the deputies of the agency you can hear him make the statement “we will lead this agency not by fear or intimidation, but by expectation.”
