As the eleventh member of the Commission, the Mayor/CEO serves as the chief elective officer of the Unified Government. The Mayor/CEO has veto power and presides over the Board of Commissioners, casting a vote only in the case of a tie or as otherwise required.

The Mayor/CEO officiates and presides at all official functions and events and serves as the governing officer for all Unified Government committees. The Mayor/CEO appoints the County Administrator, who manages county operations; the Planning Commission, which serves in an advisory capacity on land use issues; and various other boards and commissions.
