Unofficial reports from the days of the town of Wyandotte tell of a department of volunteers who dropped their work or sprang from their beds at the alarm sounded by church bells or by the cry of “Fire”. That town grew to be the city of Kansas City Kansas and that volunteer department turned into the professional fire department our community has today.
The earliest recorded information to date the beginning of fire service in this community is on a “fire trumpet” dated December 25 1883. Since that time the firefighters of our community have risked their personal safety to protect the lives and property of our citizens. From humble beginnings as a volunteer department and progressing to the modern department we have today, the men and women of the Kansas City Kansas Fire Department have always been there when the call went out for help.
Many things have changed over the years, from the design of fire stations and equipment to the types of emergencies encountered. But one thing has remained constant; men and women still will drop what they are doing, whatever time of day or night and respond to the needs of our citizens. The Kansas City Kansas Fire Department looks forward to the challenge of meeting the needs of our community as we have since our department began.
