The region has the presence of a large number of major federal and state highways.  A total of 12 major highways crisscross the area encompassing the Unified Government.  Of this total:

  • Five highways, I-35, I-70, I-435, I-635, and I-670, are National Interstate Highways;
  • Five, U.S. 24, U.S. 40, U.S. 69, U.S. 73, and U.S. 169, are major U.S. Highways; and
  • Two, 5, and 32, are major State Highways.  The Kansas Turnpike and its interface with I-70 and I-35 channels a great deal of east-west and north-south transcontinental traffic.
