Grass clippings and leaves many times are blown out into the street. With wind and/or water these grass clippings and leaves many times end up in the storm drain.  Not only can these yard wastes clog up storm drains they adversely impact the oxygen levels in local waterways.

How Can I Reduce Yard Waste Runoff?

Consider using a mulching mower for cutting your grass.  K-State research has shown this does not lead to thatching.

  1.  Never  blow grass clippings and leaves into the street.
  2. Use of a mulching mower, leaving grass clippings on the yard, may reduce fertilization requirements by 50%.
  3. Consider using a mulching mower for up to 2-3 inches of leaves in the fall time.
  4. Consider backyard composting . Your compost container must be continuously maintained and cared for.
