Native Prairie Restoration

CALC Collage

As part of the Department of Air Quality’s (DAQ) Clean Air Lawn Care program, the DAQ recently began a native prairie restoration project on the grounds surrounding the Unified Government Public Health Department (619 Ann Avenue, Kansas City, KS 66101). A prairie is the native grassland of central North America. Hundreds of species of grasses, wildflowers, butterflies, birds, and other animals make up this rich ecosystem. The use of native prairie grasses in small-scale landscaping provides a low-maintenance, aesthetically pleasing turf grass alternative.

Several turf graswere converted to native prairie by planting the following native grasses and forbs: (grasses) big bluestem, Indian s areas grass, switch grass, little bluestem, prairie dropseed, purpletop, buffalo grass, side oats grama, blue grama, purple love grass, (forbs) red sage, prairie blazing star, blue false indigo, white false indigo, purple coneflower, pale purple coneflower, black eyed susan, blue lobelia, lead plant and butterfly milkweed. Native plants require no fertilizer, fewer pesticides and less water than turf grass and help reduce air pollution because they don’t need to be mowed or trimmed.

Once established, the native prairie and associated signage will serve as a “living” bulletin board for public education and outreach. Feel free to stop by in person or visit this site to check on the native prairie’s progress.

The Kansas Native Plant Society has chosen the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/ KCK - Department of Air Rachel Snyder AwardQuality's Clean Air Lawn Care Project to receive the Rachael Snyder Memorial Landscape Award at the 2007 KNPS Annual Meeting in Hutchinson, KS.

The Rachel Snyder Memorial Landscape Award is given to an individual or organization for a project promoting the use of native plants in the landscape.
