Child Abuse Hotline1

The juvenile department of the District Attorney's office handles cases involving juveniles under the age of 18. There are two ways a juvenile becomes involved with our department:

  1. As a "juvenile offender"
    • A juvenile offender is a juvenile between the ages of 10 through 17 who has allegedly committed a crime
  2. As a "child in need of care"
    • A child in need of care is a juvenile between the ages of birth through 17 who is abused, neglected, truant, a runaway, out of parental control, under 10 years of age and has allegedly committed a crime, or is in an environment that may harm him or her.

If the juvenile is a first time misdemeanor offender, he or she may be eligible for a diversion program.  If the juvenile successfully completes the diversion program, the case is dismissed without a finding of guilt. We currently have four diversion programs:

Juvenile Detention Center

Juvenile Correctional Facilities

In 2004, we filed 645 child in need of care cases and 1,335 juvenile offender cases.  Of those juvenile offender cases filed, 804 were misdemeanor cases and 531 were felony cases. 365 of the misdemeanor cases were filed as diversions.
