It is through the Municipal Courts that most citizens in the State come into contact with the judicial system, either as a defendant, a victim, or a witness.
There are two full-time judges that are appointed by the County Commission, and are granted the authority under state law to pronounce sentences on those found guilty or to grant probation or parole. The Municipal Court is considered a court of limited jurisdiction, having responsibility for:
- Motor vehicle and parking tickets
- Minor criminal-type offenses (for example, simple assault and bad checks)
- Municipal ordinance offenses (such as dog barking or building code violations)
- Fish and game violations
A Municipal Court usually has jurisdiction only over cases that occur within the boundaries of its municipality. The Municipal Court acts on tickets written by Kansas City, Kansas Police, Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office, Railroad Police, KU Med Center Police, Kansas City, Kansas Code Enforcement Officers and Kansas City, Kansas Animal Control Officers, Parking Control Officers, and Park Rangers. Tickets written by the Kansas Highway Patrol are processed by the District Court.
