New Residents

As a new or long time resident with a new car or truck, you need to register your vehicle with the state for a fee and pay your property taxes at the local County Treasurers Office to drive legally (Military and full-time college students may register at either their legal residence or where they are stationed).

Steps you need to follow:

  • You are allowed (90) days to re-register your vehicle

  • Original out of state title or if the lien holder is holding your title in the other state, have the lien holder fax a copy to one of our offices:

    • 710 N 7th St:  F: (913) 573-2890

    • 8200 State Ave:  F: (913) 573-8554

  • Motor Vehicle Examination (MVE-1) located at the Tourist Center I-70 Westbound just before the 78th St. Exit. The Hwy. Patrol requires the vehicle, title, driver’s license and $15 fee.

  • Kansas liability proof of insurance

  • Lien release if vehicle is paid. (Notary may be required, depending on the state)

  • Changing ownership will require additional information

After you license your car for the first time in Wyandotte County, you are responsible for the annual renewals prior to expiration. If you do not receive the courtesy renewal notice from the state by the 5th of your expiration month, contact the Motor Vehicle Department office for assistance. The renewal month is determined by the first letter of an individual's last name or the first letter of a company's name. For more information on this process, see Renewing your License.

Complete handicapped application form your doctor, and return the signed application to your nearest Auto License Department.  The application can be mailed in for a disabled placard.

Request for a disabled license plate must be made in person. Bring in the license plate registered to your vehicle, registration, and proof of insurance to exchange for a disabled plate.

Registered through Kansas Fish & Game: (913) 894-9113. Applications may be picked up at our Clerk’s Office.

Various registration types:

  • Recreational trailer is registered similar to an auto registration. Plates and personal property tax are calculated on a prorated basis from the date of purchase to the expiration date according to the initial of your last name.

  • Box trailer, semi-trailer, refrigeration trailer, farm trailer, flat beds, etc:
Prorated by either a full year or half year being the purchase date of July 1 or later. The personal property tax is figured annually, January 1 - December 31. The full amount or first half of the tax is due on or before December 20. The last half is due by June 20 of the following year.

The weight strip affixed to the license plate indicates the gross weight (weight of the trailer and the load). The truck registration weight is for the weight of the truck, trailer, and load of both the truck and trailer. Trailer weights consist of up to 8M, 12, and >12M pounds. The registration fee varies from $18 to $38 annually.
Title work is the same as titling a new vehicle or titling a used vehicle.

Registered through the local County Treasurer’s Office or you would notify the state for pro-rate and apportioned plates. The truck registration weight is for the weight of the truck, trailer, and load of both the truck and trailer. There are four different categories to choose from; Regular meaning no mileage restrictions, Local meaning 25 mile radius from address listed on the registration, Farm meaning the vehicle is used for farm use only, and 6,000 Mile meaning the truck will remain under 6000 miles per year. All categories have a weight range from 16M to <80M pounds paying a prorated registration fee with the exception of the 6000 Mile which is not prorated. All of these categories allow a quarterly registration payment by surrendering the title on the first payment by Feb. 15, second payment due by April 1, third payment due by July 1, and last payment due by October 1. Once full payment is received, the state will return the title by mail. The registration fees vary from Regular $103 - $1928, Local and 6000 Mile registration fees vary from $63 - $1003, and Farm registration fees from $38 - $603.
