Assessments
Getting Started
If you are redeveloping a site, whether it's a vacant parcel or an existing structure, - your site may be brownfields eligible. If you know or suspect that the site is a brownfield, please fill out this brownfields nomination form(PDF, 231KB) and email it to Alyssa Marcy, Brownfields Coordinator, at amarcy@wycokck.org. Conducting brownfields assessments provide the following essential information and support to parties of the property:
- Liability protection from future enforcement for owners
- Clearing properties of environmental issues for future sale or redevelopment
- Gathering future information to support environmental remediation and improve environmental and public health
Assessments of brownfield sites are funded purely through available grant programs facilitated by the UG and its partners. The following paragraphs outline the next steps after a brownfields nomination form is submitted.
Phase I Environmental Site Assessment (Phase I ESA)
Information is needed to confirm that a property is a brownfield. A Phase I ESA is essentially a historical review of all current and previous uses of a property and adjacent properties to determine potential sources of contamination. This assessment consists of review of historical records, an interview with the property owner(s), and an in-person field visit to visually identify potential contamination sources. Once complete, a Phase I ESA identifies if a site has recognized environmental conditions (RECs), and if so, a Phase II ESA is required.
Phase II ESA
A Phase II ESA involves taking soil samples and, if needed based on the Phase I, groundwater samples. These samples are sent to a laboratory to identify the types and levels of contaminants. If the contamination concentrations exceed federally acceptable levels, remediation will be required.
