Election Workers

• Must be a resident of Wyandotte County.
• Must be a registered voter.
• Must be able to work at least 14 consecutive hours on Election Day.
• Must attend the mandatory election worker training before every election.

• Check in voters and obtain voter signatures on the Poll Pad.
• Operate voting machines.
• Issue ballots to eligible voters.
• Provide voting instructions to voters.
• Set up and take down voting booths and equipment.
• Be present at the polling place continuously from 6:00AM - 8:00PM.

All election workers are required to attend a 3-4 hour training session to be qualified to work. Additional training may be necessary for specific assignments or technical duties. Training is held during the (3) week period before every election. Election workers are notified prior to the commencement of the training period.

Election workers may receive at least $9.01 an hour per election and for attending the mandatory training prior to each election.

Wyandotte County community organizations can earn money for service projects and promote civic responsibility at the same time. Encourage your members who meet the qualifications for becoming an election worker to volunteer and donate their earnings to your organization.

Legal requirements for political party representation at each polling place may prevent us from assigning organization members to the same polling place. But some organizations may have sufficient diversity in their political affiliations to make it possible to give some members the opportunity to work together.

Becoming an election worker, even as a volunteer who intends to donate their earnings, carries with it the full responsibility to work according to the same standards required of all election workers. Volunteers must be at the polls continuously from 6:00AM - 8:00PM or when released by the Supervising Judge.

Workers must be able to:

• work for (14+) hours,
• to be able to stand, and;
• be able to help set up tables, chairs, voting booths and other equipment.

Kansas high school students who are (16) years of age are eligible to become election workers. This opportunity provides students with a greater awareness of the electoral process as well as the rights and responsibilities of voters. Students benefit their community by helping fill important election worker positions at polling places on Election Day.

Qualifications:

• Must be (16+) years of age at the time of the election
• Must be a U.S. citizen
• Must be a resident of Wyandotte County
• Must provide a copy of their Social Security card
• Must be available and willing to work a (14) hour day
  
  

Training:
All student election workers must attend the mandatory training. Training is scheduled for a morning or afternoon session (about four hours) during a (3) week period before each election.

Election Day Responsibilities:
Student election workers are assigned to precinct election boards and do the same tasks as adult election workers. These tasks are assigned by the Supervising Judge and may include any of the tasks performed by adult members of the election board.

Compensation:
Election workers receive $9.01 per hour for work and training time. Students may elect to receive service hours in lieu of compensation

Hours on Election Day:
All election workers report to their assigned work site on Election Day no later than 6:00AM to prepare for the opening of the polls at 7:00AM.

The polls close at 7:00PM. After polls close, all election workers assist in packing election supplies and equipment, preparing required reports, and closing down the polling site. No one is permitted to leave until released by the Supervising Judge.
