Dumpster Days


Public Works is excited to announce the community's First WyCo Dumpster Days event!  Dumpster Days is an opportunity for residents to recycle electronics waste and unwanted bulky items, like mattresses and appliances, for free.

The event will be held in the parking lot of the former Kmart location at 7836 State Ave, Kansas City, KS 66112 on October 22 & 23 from 8 AM to 1 PM.

Visitors will need to show proof of Wyandotte County residency with something displaying their name and address, like a driver's license or utility bill.

When & Where is the Event?

WyCo Dumpster Days will be held in the parking lot of the County's COVID-19 Testing & Vaccination Center at 7836 State Avenue, Kansas City, KS 66112 on October 22 & 23 from 8 AM to 1 PM.

Visitors should enter the disposal line at North 79th Street & State Avenue.  Please do not block traffic while waiting to unload your items.


What Electronics Waste Can I Recycle?

Dumpster Days provides resident with the opportunity to recycle most electronics waste for free.  Items accepted include:

  • Accessories (cables, mouse, keyboard, power supplies)
  • Calculator
  • Cameras
  • Computer (desktop, laptop) inc. destroying hard drive
  • Computer (desktop/laptop) inc. hard drive wipe
  • CRT Monitors (bulky size)*
  • Desktop All-in-One (w/monitor) inc. hard drive wipe
  • Desktop All-in-One (w/monitor) inc. hard drive destruction
  • DVD/VCR players
  • Game consoles
  • Hard drives (loose) destroyed
  • Hard drives (loose) wiped
  • Large Misc. (i.e. Vacuum, etc.)
  • LCD monitors
  • Microwave
  • Network equip (router, switches, modem, hub)
  • Phone-cell (inc. wipe data)
  • Phone-desk & answering machine
  • POS Systems
  • Printer (desk), copier, fax, typewriter
  • Printer toner cartridges
  • Printer-enterprise (on wheels-large size)
  • Projector-overhead/slide
  • Recording devices-Audio, DLT tapes, VHS Tapes
  • Recording devices-CD/DVD/Floppy Disk (12"x 10" box)

  • Server charges base plus each hard drive destroyed

*The fee for Televisions and CRT Televisions/Monitors is $35.00. Cash only. Exact change required.

What Else is Recycled?

In addition to electronics recycling, Public Works has partnered with Avenue of Life to recycle gently-used mattresses.  They will also collect gently-used furniture.

What's Accepted?

Most household items are accepted. This includes:

  • Televisions*
  • And More!

*The disposal fee for televisions and CRT tube televisions/monitors is $35.00.  Cash only.  Exact change is required.

What's Not Accepted?

There are some items that cannot be disposed of at this event.  They include:

  • All Household Hazardous Waste
  • Yard Waste
  • Batteries
  • Storm Debris
  • Food Waste
  • Recycling
  • Tires
  • Construction demolition material
  • Fencing
  • Any item from businesses, non-profits, or other commercial entities

These items will be turned away at the event, so remember not to bring them!  Items not accepted at this event may be taken to the Recycling & Yard Waste or the Household Hazardous Waste Disposal centers. 

Recycling & Yard Waste Center: 3241 Park Drive, Kansas City, KS 66102
The Recycling & Yard Waste Center is open free of charge to Wyandotte County Residents. The center can accept items like clear, brown, and colored glass; mixed office paper, cardboard, food & beverage cans, plastics #1-7, grass clippings, garden trimmings, leaves, branches, and stumps. Visitors will need to show proof of residency with a drivers license, BPU bill, or some other document displaying your name and address.

The Center is open from 10 AM to 3 PM Thursday through Sunday from:

  • April 8 to November 28, and
  • December 4 to March 27, 2022

The center cannot accept stumps or logs larger than 12 inches in diameter or branches longer than 4 feet. To view the complete list of accepted items, download or view the Recycling & Yard Waste Center FAQ.

Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Center: 2443 South 88th Street, Kansas City, KS 66111
The Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Center is available to Wyandotte County residents free of charge. Products accepted include auto batteries, used motor oil, brake fluid, carburetor cleaner, degreasers, gasoline & fuels, furniture stripper, glue with solvents, latex & oil-based paints, paint thinner, putty, grout, caulk & spackle, roofing tar, stain varnish & lacquer, aerosol products, drain & oven cleaners, mothballs, nail polish remover, polish with solvents, spot remover, and propane cylinders. Visitors will need to show proof of residency with a drivers license, BPU bill, or some other document displaying their name and address.

This year's HHW events have passed. The HHW will re-open in 2022 on April 23, May 21, June 18, July 16, August 20, September 17, and October 16 from 8:30 AM to 1:00 PM.

Who Will Unload My Items?

Visitors are responsible for unloading and disposing of their items in the available dumpster.  Public Works team members will be on hand to assist with especially bulky items in some cases.

What Else Should I Know?

Help our first-ever WyCo Dumpster Days event go smoothly for everyone by keeping the following in mind:

  • Arrive early - the event will end promptly at 1 PM on both days.  Vehicles waiting in line after 1 PM will be turned away
  • Do not block intersections when waiting in line
  • Following the directions of Public Works team members and Police Officers
  • Be ready to show your proof of residency
  • Bring appropriate gloves and eye protection to limit the risk of injury while unloading
  • Do not argue with team members about accepted items
  • Be courteous to others
