Why Housing Choice Vouchers Should be a Part of Every Rental Portfolio

The Department of Housing and Urban Development's (HUD's) Landlord Task Force welcomes landlords, public housing authority (PHA) representatives, and other industry partners located in HUD's Region VII (Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska) to this three-day virtual symposium. The symposium is designed to offer information to landlords about HUD voucher assistance programs (commonly known as Section 8) including the Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program. Each day will feature presentations on a different focus area as described below.

The Housing Choice Voucher Program (Section 8): Basics and Program Updates for Landlords

The symposium kicks off by introducing landlords to HUD's HCV program. Representatives from local PHAs will provide an overview of their voucher programs and landlord incentives, and discuss why accepting vouchers is a good business opportunity for landlords.

A Closer Look: Special Purpose Vouchers and Inspections

Day 2 includes two sessions. The first session will introduce the audience to special purpose voucher programs, such as the Emergency Housing Voucher (EHV) program. The second session will provide insights into the important area of inspections. It will discuss the inspections process including educational resources that can help landlords maintain unit health and safety.

Increase Landlord Recruitment and Retention

Thursday, July 21 FROM 10AM-12PM CENTRAL

Strategies for PHAs to Increase Landlord Recruitment and Retention

The final day of the symposium will cover a range of information to assist PHAs in better understanding their programs and recruiting and retaining landlords. In the first presentation, HUD will provide statistical information on the size, leasing potential, payment standards, and turnover in Region VII voucher programs. The second presentation will offer strategies that PHAs can use to increase landlord participation, including ways to market special purpose vouchers. In the second part of the day, local PHAs will share ways that they have been able to increase the number and types of resources available to landlords. This discussion will include tips for small and rural PHAs.
