Biography

Michael G. Abbott, is the Election Commissioner of Wyandotte County, KS, where he manages and conducts elections in the following jurisdictions: Wyandotte County & City of Kansas City, KS, City of Bonner Springs, City of Edwardsville, City of Lake Quivira, Board of Public Utilities, 29th Judicial District and District Attorney, Kansas City, KS Community College, Unified School Districts, USD# 202 Turner, USD# 203 Piper, USD# 204 Bonner Springs/Edwardsville, USD# 500 Kansas City, KS, Drainage Districts

Mr. Abbott leads an office of 10 full-time employees and over 300 part-time election workers.  Mr. Abbott was sworn into office by Kansas Secretary of State Scott Schwab on March 1, 2021. The Election Office is responsible for executing free, fair, transparent, and secure elections for the voters of Wyandotte County. 

Mr. Abbott’s focus is on building an election team focused on educating voters on the voting process and efficiently reporting results to voters in a timely manner.  Mr. Abbott has already spearheaded high school voter registration opportunities for Wyandotte County Seniors who will be 18 years old in time for the next Primary and General Election. 

Mr. Abbott hopes to speak to many different organizations that will assist the county in education and knowledge about elections and voting.  “I am focused on education and an open door approach to Elections.  I want the people of Wyandotte County to work, volunteer, or come down to the Election Office and learn the way elections work.  Our door is always open.” 

Professional Background

Mr. Abbott has lived in Wyandotte County since 2014 and his experience includes public and private sector leadership. Prior to becoming Wyandotte County Election Commissioner, Mr. Abbott served as Program Coordinator for Election Technology in the Wyandotte County Election Office for over 5 years.  Prior to working for Wyandotte County, Mr. Abbott worked for AT&T as a Retail Account Executive Manager, Dealer Account Executive, and Retail Sales Consultant. 

Mr. Abbott serves as a member of the MS-ISAC (Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center) which is a voluntary program within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.   Mr. Abbott also serves as the Wyandotte County subject matter expert on the statewide voter registration database.  

Education

As a first-generation college graduate, Mr. Abbott holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Organization Management and Leadership from Friends University and an Associate’s Degree in Communication Studies from Cowley County Community College. 

Personal 

Mr. Abbott resides in Kansas City, Kansas with his beautiful wife and two adorable children.  Mr. Abbott is an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan and chose Wyandotte County to live in because he feels it’s the perfect mix of country and city living.
