UG to use data collection system to improve roads in KCK

The County Administrator's Office and UG staff got an opportunity to see first hand how the new technology will assist the Pulbic Works Department with strategic planning for future road projects.

The Infrastructure Management System (IMS) is a new automated pavement data collection system that evaluates the conditon of the roads, curbs and gutters, sidewalks, street signs, pavement markings and a lot more.

The IMS vehicle is equipped with 11 lasers and 7 different cameras positioned at different locations  around the van to gather data that will help the UG inventory and geo-locate elements in the right-of-way. The UG plans to purchase portions of this data collection service ove the next few years. The collection of all of this data leads to a more robust information source that will aide staff in strategic planning for improving the roads throughout our city in a more effective and efficient manner.
