Unified Government Offices Move to Minimum Staffing Working Remotely on Tuesday to Conserve Electricity – Customers Encouraged to Utilize Online Tools
Record-setting cold temperatures across the Midwest have potential to impact power supply

(KANSAS CITY, Kan.) — Upon advisement of the Kansas City Board of Public Utilities (BPU), as part of regional efforts to reduce energy consumption, the Unified Government will be operating with a skeletal staff onsite on Tuesday, February 16. Staff will be supporting operations remotely, as appropriate, to help reduce electricity demand at public facilities during the region’s coldest weather in decades.

Everyone is encouraged to reduce electricity usage at home in order to maintain electricity supply overall and avoid potential power outages.

“Everybody must do their part to save electricity the next few days and this in turn will help us make sure the power supply continues to best serve the region’s needs,” said David Mehlhaff, BPU Chief Communications Officer.
Trash services will be delayed by one day and other services may also be impacted by the weather. KCK Municipal Court Zoom hearings on Tuesday, February 16 are cancelled and will be rescheduled. Many local government services can be accessed through the UG website at www.wycokck.org

The Unified Government Public Health Department will continue with COVID-19 vaccinations at both locations (more information available here) and warming centers will be available during regular business hours. The hotline for the KCK Cold Weather Shelter, provided by the Red Cross, is 913-214-1104 with beds available first come first serve during this extreme weather.
