Personal Property
2025 Personal Property Notice of Values will be mailed on May 1, 2025.
The County Appraiser’s Office is required, per K.S.A. 79-1460 to notify taxpayers of the valuation and classification of their Personal Property on or before May 1, 2025.
Please Note: New filing requirements for personal property as prescribed in K.S.A. 79-306, effective July 1, 2024.
Previously, all Kansas taxpayers were required to annually list, sign, and submit a personal property rendition to the county appraiser’s office no later than March 15 for all tangible personal property subject to taxation located in that county’s taxing districts as of January 1. The 2024 Kansas Legislature passed Senate Bill 410, which amends K.S.A. 79-306 and removes the annual reporting requirement for taxpayers with an accurate rendition on file and no changes required.
As amended, K.S.A. 79-306 now states, “if a person has filed an initial statement listing property with the county appraiser pursuant to this section, no subsequent annual statement shall be required to be filed with the county appraiser regarding such property unless there is a change to report relating to the property previously listed or the statement”. Thus, if a current and accurate personal property rendition is on file in the county appraiser’s office, there is no longer a requirement to file a rendition annually unless there are changes. If there are any changes to report, the taxpayer is required to file a rendition for that tax year to avoid penalties. Examples of changes that should be reported are the purchase of new personal property, the sale of personal property, and changes to the address or use of personal property.
Due to the annual reporting changes, on January 13, 2025, the Wyandotte County Appraiser’s Office, Personal Property Division mailed to all current account holders as of January 1, 2025, a 2025 Personal Property Worksheet/Rendition listing the assets our office currently had on file for review. If needed, changes and/or additions were to be indicated, the form signed and returned to the Wyandotte County Appraiser’s Office, 8200 State Avenue, Kansas City, KS 66112 prior to March 17, 2025 (due to March 15, 2025, falling on a weekend, the filing deadline is extended to the next business day March 17, 2025).
In addition to the new filing requirements, pursuant to Kansas Statues 79-301, 79-303, 79-306, and 79-1422 the late and failure to file penalties have been adjusted to the following schedules, late filing is 2% per month up to a maximum of 10%, the penalty for failure to file is 12.5%.
