Tax Rebates

Rebates are offered to eligible citizens who are BPU ratepayers in Wyandotte County for a portion of their BPU, gas or telecommunications utility bills.  If you qualify for utility rebates, you will also qualify for BPU PILOT relief.

Rebates are offered to eligible citizens of Kansas City, Kansas who have paid sales tax.

Homestead Rebates are offered to eligible citizens who live in Wyandotte County, Kansas for a portion of their property taxes.

Utility & Sales Tax Rebates

Step 1.The rebate season has closed for 2023.  Please check this website periodically for updates to the program for 2024. 

Step 2.To ensure you are ready to file beginning in January 2025, please start saving your BPU, gas, or other utility bills monthly. 

Step 3.Be sure you have a letter stating your date of disability.  You will need your 2024 income to file your rebates.  

INCOME GUIDELINES RECEIVED FOR TAX YEAR 2024:  

$42,600 PER APPLICANT (ONE APPLICANT PER HOUSEHOLD) 

Step 4.How do I qualify?

Residents of Wyandotte County with a BPU account for utilities can apply for a Utility Tax rebate. If you answer yes to these questions, this rebate could be available to you:

  • Are you a BPU ratepayer in Wyandotte County?
  • Will you be sixty-five or disabled on January 1, 2025?
  • Is your income $42,600 or below (some disability income may be excluded) (THIS AMOUNT WILL CHANGE YEARLY)
  • Qualification for the Utility Tax rebate will also qualify you for BPU PILOT relief beginning June 1, 2024

Residents of the City of Kansas City, Kansas can apply for a Sales Tax rebate. If you answer yes to these questions, this rebate could be available to you:

  • Are you a resident of the City of Kansas City, Kansas?
  • Will you be sixty-five or disabled on January 1, 2025?
  • Is your income $42,600 or below (Some disability income may be excluded) (THIS AMOUNT WILL CHANGE YEARLY)

     



Step 5.When can I apply?

You can only apply for the rebates from January 2 through April 15, 2025.

Step 6.What documents do I need?

  1. Your contact information (full name, complete home address, date of birth and telephone number). If you want your check mailed to a different address, please provide the mailing address and mark separately as your preferred mailing address.

  2. If disabled, the date of disability and from what agency (i.e. social security, railroad, veterans' administration).

  3. Proof of income for you for all of 2024. Documents accepted are:
    • W-2, 1099
    • Social Security statement (received at the beginning of the year showing how much you received for the previous year {usually has pink boxes with total amounts on the form})
    • Railroad retirement statement
    • Veteran's disability statement
    • Bank interest statements
    • Food stamp award
    • Child support income

  4. If you pay BPU, Kansas Gas, Atmos Gas or telecommunication bills, you will need copies of your 2024 utility bills. You can obtain copies of your BPU bills by calling BPU. Be sure you tell them you are applying for the Utility Rebate.

Step 7.How do I submit my documents?

By Mail

Mail your documents to the Clerk's Office. We will return your original documents to you.

In Person

Bring your information to the Clerk's Office between 8:30 AM – 4:00 PM, Monday – Friday, on a walk-in basis. Various sites will be designated throughout the county where applications will be processed. The following locations will be hosting appointments for rebate applications.

Please call (913) 573-5311 to schedule an appointment for the Argentine Community Center, Eisenhower Community Center, or the UG Annex. Call the Area Agency on Aging directly to schedule an appointment with that agency. No appointments are required for City Hall or the Turner Recreation Center.

If you need transportation, please notify the call taker at the time you schedule your appointment and transportation services will be arranged on your behalf.

Step 8.How long will it take to receive my rebate?

The Clerk's Office will process your application and mail you a copy for your records within five business days of our receipt. You should receive your rebate check from the Unified Government approximately eight weeks after your application has been processed.

Don't forget to see if you qualify for the Homestead/Safe Senior rebate available through the Clerk's Office.

Homestead/Safe Senior Rebate

Step 3.You will need your 2024 income to file your rebates.

INCOME GUIDELINES RECEIVED FOR TAX YEAR 2024:  

  • HOMESTEAD: $42,600 PER HOUSEHOLD 
  • SAFE SENIOR:  $24,500 PER HOUSEHOLD
  • SENIOR/DISABLED VETERAND SVR:  $56,450 PER HOUSEHOLD

 

How do I qualify?

If you own and live in your home, you can apply to have a portion of your real estate taxes refunded back to you from the State of Kansas.

Step 4.When can I apply?

You can apply for the Homestead/Safe Senior/Disabled Veterans rebates from January 2 through April 15 of each year.

If you file a tax return, the Clerk's Office cannot file a Homestead/Safe Senior/Disabled Veterans claim on your behalf. If you miss the filing deadline, you must contact the Kansas Department of Revenue at (785) 368-8222 to obtain authority to file a late return.

  4. A copy of your most recent real estate tax statement.

  5. The amount of your previous year's homestead/safe senior refund.

  6. Your Homestead/Safe Senior/Disabled Veterans rebate can be directly deposited into your bank account. Please provide a copy of a bank deposit form that includes your account number and bank routing number.

Step 8.What is the Advancement Program?

The Advancement program applies to your Homestead/Safe Senior rebate. This program provides eligible homeowners with the opportunity to apply a portion of their anticipated Homestead refund to help pay the first half of their property tax each year. This advancement from the State is received in January at the Treasurer's Office on behalf of those taxpayers that qualified for a homestead tax refund the previous year and elected to participate in the program. It allows the taxpayer a credit to be used against the payment of their first half of real estate taxes. These tax payments are due December 20.
