Commercial Vehicle Registration to be processed by State of Kansas in the new year

Wyandotte County, KS -  Due to the limited number of transactions handled by the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, KS annually, the State of Kansas will begin processing all Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) registrations directly, starting January 1, 2022. The Unified Government has been processing these transactions via appointment-only services and have been working with customers to help them transition to the online application. We are making this change due to the relatively low volume of transactions, challenges with staffing, and the desire to improve customer service for Wyandotte County residents.

In 2014, the State made significant changes to the law regarding the titling and registering of Commercial Motor Vehicles (CMV). The changes required that commercial vehicles pay a flat fee based on weight and age of the vehicle in lieu of paying property taxes. In addition to the statutory changes, the State rolled out another statewide computer system for processing CMV transactions (KCoVRS.)

Counties were given the option as to provide the CMV services and, at that time, Wyandotte County chose to opt in for the new process, providing the service to customers on a walk-in basis. In January 2019, Treasury migrated the CMV service to appointment-only. Since then, we have been working with customers to show them how to complete their registration online without coming into the office at all. The majority of CMV customers are businesses and prefer online services or visiting a full-service county office. Transactions processed annually by the Treasurer’s office have declined 30% from 2015 through 2020, reducing the demand for this service each year.

“This change in service will allow our commercial motor vehicle clients to continue to use the online services that are increasingly more popular,” said Interim Treasurer Andrea Vinyard (Parra). “By shifting these transactions back to the State, we free up our limited resources to provide better service to our other customers.”
