KCK Sets New Regional Record with Growth of Bikeshare Use in 2022

Bikeshare across the Kansas City metropolitan area continues to see record growth year over year. Monthly ridership records were broken six months in a row during 2022. Overall, the metropolitan area saw a 29% increase in ridership from 2022 which accounts for 110,000 miles ridden, 7.4 million calories burned, and 100,000 lbs of carbon offsets.

Kansas City, KS Leading in Growth

Ridership in Kansas City, Kansas exploded in 2022 with an 83% increase from 2021, which is by far the largest jump in ridership for any metro region on record. There was also a significant increase in the rate of cross traffic with KCK bikes traveling to other local municipalities such as Westwood and neighborhoods throughout Kansas City, Missouri.

KCK ridership was comparable to the rest of the region with peak usage around 4-6PM. The average trip duration was 16 minutes, two minutes shorter than the regional average. Trips by riders with a membership accounted for 63% of total ridership, which is 10% higher than the regional average.

How to Use Bikeshare

RideKC Bike, in partnership with the Unified Government, provides electric assist bikes that can be parked anywhere within the service area or at designated bike hubs across the metro. You can sign-up for a membership which gives you up to 80 minutes of free riding a day or pay by ride.

  1. Download the RideKC Bike App from either Google Play or the Apple App Store.
  2. Create an account and select your membership option:
    • Walk-up registration: E-bikes are $1.00 to unlock and 15 cents per minute. Classic bikes are $1.00 to unlock and 10 cents per minute.
    • 24-hour pass: $15, take unlimited rides, each up to 4 hours. Unlock fees are waived. Additional minutes are charged at the same rate as pay-as-you-go trips. Expires 24 hours after purchase.
    • 30-day membership: $39. No unlock fees. Includes 80 minutes of free riding time per day.
    • 90-day membership: $99. No unlock fees. Includes 80 minutes of free riding time per day.
    • Annual membership: $149. No unlock fees. Includes 80 minutes of free riding time per day.
  3. Use the app to find a bike and unlock it.
  4. Adjust the seat to a safe and comfortable height, hop on, and pedal away!
  5. When you reach your destination, use the cable lock to secure your bike.
  6. End your trip following the instructions in the app.

The Unified Government has been piloting year-round service with the Municipal Building bike hub for commuters who now rely on bikeshare.
