UG Partnership Will Provide Shelter Beds in Extreme Weather

The Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas (UG) has partnered again with Cross-Lines Community Outreach this year to manage and operate the temporary Severe Cold Weather Overnight Shelter beginning in mid-December 2022 through March 31, 2023.

This year the overnight shelter will be located at 550 State Ave, Kansas City, KS 66102.  It will be available to those in need on nights when the temperature is 25 degrees Fahrenheit or below. Shelter operations will start from 4:30 p.m. to 9:00 a.m. the following day. Guests will be allowed to be onsite from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 a.m.  The expected maximum capacity of the shelter will be 35 people and available beds will be first come, first served.

“We are called, through our values of caring and commitment to community, to protect the unhoused,” said Mayor Tyrone A. Garner. “Opening this winter’s overnight shelter will provide a safe and warm refuge during the difficult winter months.”

“We appreciate the collaborative efforts of UG staff and Community Partners in protecting the unhoused,” said Assistant County Administrator Alan Howze. “Opening the Severe Cold Weather Shelter will save lives and to protect the most vulnerable in our community.

Cross-Lines staff, and a variety of community partner organizations, will provide a variety of support services, meals, and assistance to get clients into permanent housing.   

The Shelter will be partially funded by Emergency Solutions Grant CARES ACT funding that the was awarded to the City of Kansas City, KS in 2020.  

Determination whether the shelter will be open for the evening will be made by 8am each day, and the information will be available by calling 913-214-1104.

In addition to the overnight shelter, there are multiple warming centers in the Kansas City, Kansas area.
