Getting your online driveway permit is the easiest way to complete the application. To move forward, you will need to complete all the steps.  Let’s get started.

Step 1.Tips for Contracted Work

If you choose to hire out the work, here are some tips for success.

  • Ask for verification of bonding and insurance from any contractor you choose.
  • Check out the contractor on the Better Business Bureau of Kansas City.
  • Verify the contractor is licensed to work in Kansas City, Kansas. by calling the UG Business License Division at (913) 573-8780.

Step 2.Get a Dig Safe Ticket

Marking all utilities before they start any project is a safety requirement. You will need this number to complete the application.

Dig Safe ticket numbers can be obtained online at KANSAS811 or by calling 1 (800) 344-7233.

While obtaining a Dig Safe ticket, you will learn more about timelines for utility markings and tips for completing your project safely. The utilities will be marked with color code flags.

Step 3.Draw Out the Proposed Driveway

Plans can be basic drawings by the homeowner. The key items needed are the length and width of the driveway plus the placement on your property.

You will need this number to complete the application.

Step 4.Know the Rules

Each project is different. Here are some basic rules to consider. Consider reviewing the Unified Government Code of Ordinance - Chapter 32 for complete guidance.

  • Concrete must be used in most cases; gravel is illegal.
  • Maximum width at the street of the driveway is allowable up to 25 feet.
  • Only 40% of your front or back yard can be a hard surface.
  • Your driveway must be 3 feet away from the property line.

Step 5.Fill Out the Online Application

You will be asked to fill out 5 sections of the online process to apply for a driveway permit successfully.

  • Section 1 Permit Type
    Provide the Dig Safe information to complete this section.

  • Section 2 Contact Information
    In this section, you will be asked for your and the contactors contact information.

  • Section 3 Location and Time
    Give more specific details about the project.

  • Section 4 Underground Work
    This section might not apply and can be skipped. N/A can be entered into any section that does not apply.

  • Section 5 Attachments
    Attach the drawings and any other documents you wish.

Once completed, the online form is submitted to the Public Works Team for review. The team will contact you if they have any questions.

Upon approval, the Public Works Team will reach out with directions to submit payment.

Step 9.Tips for a Successful Project

  • Make sure to follow all the instructions attached to the permit.
  • Keep the permit handy. You could be required to provide it to an inspector.

Dumpster

Getting a dumpster permit online is the easiest and only way to complete the application. Let’s get started.

Step 1.Determine if a Permit Is Required

  • Dumpster Permits are required if the placement is in the right of way or on the public street.
  • A permit is not required if the dumpster is on private property.

Step 2.Gather What You Need

  • Dumpster Company name and contact information.
  • Size of the dumpster

Step 3.Know the Rules

The dumpster must be on an improved paved surface.

Step 4.Fill Out the Online Application

Make sure to fill out all the sections that apply in the application. You can list N/A in sections that do not apply.

Step 8.Tips for a Successful Project

 

Block Party

Neighborhood block parties are a wonderful way to foster community engagement and connections among residents for a safer and happier community. We want to make sure your event is successful.

Here are the steps to temporarily close a residential block to through traffic for the event day.

Step 1.Understand the Rules

Before moving forward, please read all the requirements. Here are a couple to pay special attention to.

  • Your application must be submitted 20 calendar days before the event.
  • Make sure you have someone to move barricades for access by those who live/work on the street during the event. Be sure to move those barricades for emergency vehicles.
  • Leave it in good shape. Make sure to pick up trash and equipment at the end of the event.

Step 2.Get the Signatures

Each block party application must include a completed Block Party Petition Form.

  • To meet this requirement, the Petition should have signatures of 75% of the residents and/or businesses on the street the party will be on.
  • You should also advise all residents and/or businesses to be informed of the block party permit application before the application is submitted. Taking this step will help make the event more successful.

Your application will be reviewed by the Public Works Team. Once the application is reviewed, we will reach out by phone or email.

Block party permits can be denied for things like incompleteness of the application process or public/traffic safety.

Step 5.Make Your Deposit & Payment

The cost to obtain a block party permit consists of:

Fee for Permit = $80.00

Refundable Deposit = $70.00

  • Both fees must be submitted separately by check or money order.
  • Fees can be mailed or delivered in person at 701 N. 7th Street, Suite 712 Kansas City, Kansas 66101.
  • After the event, if all the Unified Government barricades are retrieved and the area is clean, the deposit check/money order will be returned to you by mail.
