The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) will host a public meeting on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at 5:30 PM at The Hub Argentine, 3730 Metropolitan Avenue, Kansas City, KS 66106, to share findings from its investigation into the May 19, 2025, flooding in the Argentine neighborhood. The investigation is examining several factors, including the performance of the levee system’s stormwater gates, which remained closed during the storm. The first of two technical reports, prepared by USACE’s Levee project contractor, Lane Construction, has been delivered. After reviewing the report, Unified Government (UG) staff and technical experts believe it confirms that the closed flood gates were a primary factor in the severity of the May 19 flooding. At the June 16 public meeting, residents were told that additional information would be provided within 30–60 days. It has now been 70 days since that commitment, and the UG has expressed frustration with the pace of the process and the lack of direct answers to residents. “While the Corps is leading this investigation, our residents should not be left waiting while deadlines pass,” said Jeff Miles, Environmental Services Director. “The first report makes clear that the closed gates were a key cause of the May 19 flooding. Now, it is time for the community to hear directly from the Corps about what happened and what will be done to prevent it from happening again.” The UG continues to value its partnership with the USACE. However, the UG emphasizes that technical reports and private discussions are not a substitute for public discussion with impacted residents. Residents are encouraged to attend the September 3 meeting to hear from the USACE, ask questions, and share their experiences.
