Spreading Kindness Throughout Wyandotte County One Kind Gesture at a Time
During the April 13, 2023, full commission meeting, Mayor Tyrone A. Garner issued a proclamation acknowledging the Seven Days of Kindness campaign for Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas. This campaign focuses on overcoming discrimination and hate through encouraging acts of kindness and love to be spread throughout the community during the month of April.
In April 2022, Mayor Garner introduced the Seven Days of Kindness initiative to the Board of Commissioners and Unified Government (UG) employees. With great support and success last year, many employees were eager to continue the SevenDays mission throughout the Unified Government. Shortly after the launch of the Seven Days of Kindness campaign last year, many UG employees gathered to form a group of kindness ambassadors to continue intentional kind acts throughout the UG.
“I am thrilled that Unified Government employees and community members are engaging in the Seven Days of Kindness campaign again this year,” said CEO/ Mayor Tyrone A. Garner. “Many times, it’s the small gestures, such as a bright smile, a simple hello or a compliment that can make a huge impact in someone’s day. I am excited to continue the mission of the SevenDays Organization, and hopeful that this campaign will spark the hearts of our community to continue spreading random acts of kindness throughout the year.”
How to Get Involved
The Unified Government will be honoring this initiative by promoting opportunities for UG staff and community members to volunteer at various neighborhood community clean-up events; focusing on self-care and personal fitness challenges; spreading kindness among UG staff through candygrams with sales benefiting the Wyandotte County Parks Foundation; and collecting toiletries and clothing for the Sheriff’s Juvenile Intake Program.
Mayor Garner invites all Unified Government staff and community members to participate in Seven Days of Kindness and encourages everyone to find ways to showcase kindness towards oneself, others, and the environment during this initiative. The community is encouraged to tag their activities and experiences with #DotteProud and #GiveSevenDays.
About Seven Days of Kindness
The SevenDays® experience provides opportunities to encourage all people to increase kindness through knowledge, mindset and behavior. In April 2014, after a white supremacist murdered three Kansas City people because of his hate for Jews, two families and our community joined hands and hearts to shine a light on the darkness of hate.
Workplace kindness (within the community, with colleagues, and with oneself) has proven to elevate dopamine, produces oxytocin, and stimulates the action of the vegus nerve, which all help protect your heart and slow the effects of aging. These effects of kindness help keep your team members healthy, happy, and more productive. You can read more about SevenDays, including how you can participate, at their website: sevendays.org
