The southbound K-5 bridge over the Union Pacific Railroad, between 10th Street and Sunshine Road, will close to traffic at 12 PM on Monday, March 27, in Kansas City, Kansas. In consultation with the bridge inspection team, Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) engineering staff has determined this bridge is unsafe for traffic and requires full closure. KDOT is evaluating options for an emergency repair and working to develop full traffic control plans. Message boards will be in place noting the closure and directing motorists around the closure until detour signing plans become available. Once detour signing plans are available, a signing contractor will install detour signs under an emergency contract. City, county, and Missouri Department of Transportation officials have been notified of the closure, as well as the adjacent business district and Union Pacific Railroad. KDOT urges all motorists to be alert and obey the warning signs when approaching and driving through a highway work zone. To stay aware of all road construction projects across Kansas, go to www.kandrive.org or call 5-1-1. Drive safely, and always wear your seat belt.
