Unified Government names new Director of Parks & Recreation

Angel Obert continues her service to our community as our new Director
The Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, KS is pleased to announce the hiring of Angel Obert as Director of the Parks and Recreation Department. Ms. Obert joined the Unified Government of in 2017 after serving the Turner Recreation Commission as Program Director. Since joining the Unified Government, she has taken on more responsibility including managing the more than $12M budget as Assistant Director.
Most notably, Ms. Obert was instrumental in securing and leveraging $2.1 million in CARES Act funding for various projects throughout our parks during the COVID-19 pandemic. She was also named one of National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA) 30 Under 30 “The Young Parks and Recreation Professionals to Watch in 2021” earlier this year.
“I am both honored and excited to lead our Parks and Recreation Department and continue to serve our community in the role of Director,” said Obert. “We have had a lot of momentum the last two years around Parks and Recreation, and I look forward to working in partnership with the community, staff, and elected officials to build on these opportunities while planning for a sustainable department that meets the needs of all citizens in our community and future generations.”
As Director, Ms. Obert will be responsible for the daily operations of the department and developing a strategy to implement important aspects of the Parks Master Plan.
“Ms. Obert has helped this department navigate the challenges of COVID-19, with increased demand for services and access to safe, outdoor spaces, while implementing several major renovations projects to improve our facilities,” said County Administrator Doug Bach. “With her continued leadership as Director, the entire community will benefit.”
The Parks and Recreation Department manages a 2,600-acre park system with the goal to meet the leisure needs of our community. The Recreation Management Division is responsible for all recreation programming that includes youth and adult sports, recreation programs, and seasonal special events. These programs are conducted at the Department’s seven community centers, numerous athletic fields, swimming pool and parks. The Golf Course management division oversees the management of an eighteen-hole championship course with a full-service club house and a six-hole junior golf course. The Park Maintenance Division oversees the daily maintenance, repair, and development of three (3) regional parks, four (4) community parks, 47 neighborhood parks, seven (7) recreation/community center buildings, three (3) community center buildings, three (3) spray parks and one pool.
