Frequently Asked Questions

What is IRIS? IRIS is an app-driven premium service. The service utilizes an on-demand dynamic routing model, which picks up and drops off riders in locations within one-quarter mile of their request. The service gets residents within a quarter mile of their destination for a minimal fee within a defined zone. Each service zone has a designated transit transfer hub.

Why is the Unified Government Transportation Department launching IRIS? This service provides expanded connectivity for residents to fill gaps where a bus stop or other transportation service may not be as accessible. In addition, the service can connect residents to regional IRIS zones, transferring to other counties. Find out more about IRIS On-Demand Microtransit.

RideKC On-Demand (IRIS) Policy: Transportation for Minors

RideKC On-Demand (IRIS) is committed to providing safe, reliable transportation for all riders. To strengthen safety standards and better serve our community, we are updating our Transportation of Minors Policy, effective Monday, October 6, 2025.

What’s Changing

  • High School–Age Riders:
High school–age students may ride independently. Riders traveling to or from a high school are reasonably presumed to be of high school age.
  • Elementary & Middle School Riders:
RideKC On-Demand (IRIS) does not provide transportation for unaccompanied minors to or from any elementary or middle school. An adult must accompany the student on these trips.
    • Note: We understand some trips may be for employment purposes. This policy does not impact employment-related trips—it applies only to students traveling to or from elementary or middle schools.
  • Younger Riders:
Children younger than high school age may only ride when accompanied by an adult.
  • Code of Conduct:
All high school–age riders must follow the Unified Government Transportation Department Ridership Code of Conduct while using RideKC On-Demand (IRIS).

Why the Change?

This update helps:

  • Ensure safe travel for younger passengers.
  • Support parents, guardians, and schools in maintaining proper supervision.

Provide reliable transportation for high school–age students who often have after-school activities or jobs and are more capable of managing their own trips.
