On December 7, 2023, the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, KS (UG) Commission passed a new ordinance, O-159-23 amending section 17 of the Unified Government Code, that affects all tobacco retailers within Wyandotte County, Kansas. This ordinance requires all tobacco retailers to apply for and receive a local Tobacco Retail License.
The purpose of this license is to reduce the sale of tobacco products, including vaping products, to Wyandotte County youth and young adults under the age of 21.
Licenses are in effect January 1 through December 31. Tobacco retailers need to reapply each year to renew their license. The annual application period opens in November. By ordinance, the retail license is $600 annually. For 2025 licenses, the amount was prorated to be $500 due to a delayed start with the ordinance going into effect for the first time.
As of March 2025, tobacco retailers in Wyandotte County will be subject to at least one unannounced compliance check per year to ensure they are abiding by local tobacco retail regulations, including not selling tobacco to people under 21 years of age.
