The Wyandotte County Historical Museum invites everyone to celebrate the Pope Family Emancipation, recipients of the first and only know deed of emancipation produced in the state of Kansas. This program is organized by the Charles Edward Pope Senior Foundation in partnership with the WyCo Historical Museum.
This writ of emancipation, signed by Wiley M. Pope and Justice of the Peace Charles Chadwick, freed Pope's Family on June 6, 1860. It symbolized a pivotal moment in Kansas history as a recognition that enslaved people should be freed.
