KCK property owners are encouraged to apply for funds by August 31, 2023 to support the assessment and clean-up of environmental contamination on underused or vacant land. There is currently $196,600 available for project sites in Kansas City, KS; Jackson County, MO; and Kansas City, MO. The Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) provides services including Phase I and Phase II environmental site assessments, hazardous materials surveys (i.e. asbestos and lead-based paint inspections), petroleum tank site investigations for former gas stations and garages, and more. Selected applicants will receive completed services and deliverables (i.e. assessment reports) rather than direct funding. All procurement and project management is handled by MARC.

What are brownfields?

Brownfields are any vacant or underused properties where reuse is complicated by real or perceived environmental contamination. Examples include former gas stations, vacant lots with contaminated soil, or buildings with asbestos and lead-based paint. Low-interest cleanup loans and grants, and assessment services, are offered. Non-profits, private companies, and community organizations can apply; however, only non-profits and governments are eligible for grants.

Brownfields are "real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant." Brownfields blight communities across the country, inhibiting economic development and contaminating the environment.

By cleaning up these properties, local governments can protect the environment, spur economic growth, and create jobs.
