On Friday, August 15, 2025, the UG in partnership with the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA) hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the 7th and Minnesota Transit Center Improvements.

This groundbreaking officially celebrates the kick-off of $1.64 million in transit corridor improvements along three major segments along 7th St.

  • North Segment: From Minnesota Ave. to Pacific Ave.
  • Central Segment: From Kansas Ave. to Cheyenne Ave.
  • South Segment along Rainbow: From Southwest Blvd. to West 43rd St.

The project includes:

  • Installation of five real-time arrival signs at the 7th & Minnesota Transit Center
  • One security camera at the transit center
  • 25 bus stop improvements
  • 10 bus shelters and other stop amenities
  • Approximately 1,300 linear feet of sidewalk improvements, including ADA improvements.

“When I ran for office, I made a commitment to advocate for the kind of infrastructure investment that truly supports our residents, connecting them to jobs, healthcare, education and opportunity. $1.64 million in transit improvements is more than just a construction project: it reflects positive progress in our efforts to facilitate an improved quality of life. This transit center represents a modern, connected and more equitable future for our community where transportation works for everyone,” says Mayor Tyrone Garner.

“Hats off to the Unified Government of Wyandotte County for their local investment in this vital transit corridor,” said Frank White III, KCATA President & CEO. “The combination of Federal and local funding will elevate the customer experience with greater reliability and a more pleasant waiting environment.”

August 15, 2025 - Groundbreaking Highlights

During Friday's groundbreaking event was emceed by KCATA Chief Operating Officer Chuck Ferguson. Guests heard remarks and updates from Mayor Tyrone Garner, Commissioner Dr. Evelyn Hill, UG Assistant County Administrator Alan Howze, KCATA President and CEO Frank White III, UG Transit Director Deasiray Bush and special remarks Founder and President of Giving Hope and Help Inc., Jessica McCallop-McClellan. 

During this event guests were also able to view the recently completed "Connecting the Dottes" transportation mural at the corridor. Construction for this project started today, August 18, 2025. Please stay tuned for additional updates as this project progresses.
