WyCo Lake Bird Trail Signage 2025

Calling All Bird Lovers!!!

The Unified Government Parks and Recreation Department is excited to invite all bird lovers to Wyandotte County Lake Park to see the newly installed Bird Trail Signage. On April 11, 2025, at the F.L. Schlagle Library speakers UG Parks and Recreation Director Angel Ferrara, Wyandotte County Parks Foundation Board Member Kerry Herndon, Director of the KCK Public Libraries Laura Hunt, and Zach Pistora of the KS Chapter of the Sierra Club welcomed guests and shared the importance of this new signage at Wyandotte County Lake.

The trail includes seven interpretive signs placed along an existing, easy 1/4 mile trail that can be accessed from the F.L. Schlagle Library. Each sign was specially designed to draw park goers into a bird's world by showing photos of local birds and including descriptions of their habits and habitat.

Each sign is located on park/library grounds close to where each species can be observed. Interpretive signs encourage visitors to take a closer look at their surroundings and learn more about their observations and adds value to the educational programs offered by F.L. Schlagle Library.

The library currently offers a wide range of programs that reach the diverse population of Wyandotte County and the surrounding metro. Last year alone, the library hosted educational programs for over 17,000 local school children, teens, adults, scout groups, home-schooled children and summer camps. Due to the Library being located within the Wyandotte County Lake Park, the Become A Birder! Trail will be accessible to all park visitors.

A special thanks goes to the following donors for helping to make this project possible at Wyandotte County Lake Park:
