The Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas (UG) is pleased to announce that current Interim Kansas City, Kansas Fire (KCKFD) Chief Dennis L. Rubin has been hired as the full-time permanent Fire Chief for the Department.

During the November 16, 2023, full commission meeting County Administrator David Johnston announced the news to the Commission and community members. Administrator Johnston announced that Chief Rubin’s permanent transition will take effect on January 1, 2024.

Since accepting the position as Interim Fire Chief on June 1, 2023, Chief Rubin has made great strides among KCKFD staff, fire unions and community members. In less than six months, Chief Rubin has managed to evaluate various department processes and introduce and implement plans of action to continue improving community customer service. Chief Rubin has also exposed department staff to national training and professional development opportunities and conferences, such as the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) Conference and trainings focusing on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Fairness in August 2023.

“I am extremely grateful for this for the opportunity to be the 18th Fire Chief of such a great community,” said KCKFD Fire Chief Dennis L. Rubin. “Before I began back in June of this year, in speaking with County Administrator David Johnston and Assistant County Administrator Bridgette Cobbins, they mentioned, “If you love KCK, it will love you back more”. That was a pretty powerful statement my bosses made, but they were truly right! I pledge to do my very best to continue the direction that we are going in to serve our community with dignity and pride.”

KCKFD Putting Out Fires Online Series

As part of Chief Rubin’s positive vision for the department, he recently launched an online video series titled “Putting Out Fires”. During these videos Chief Rubin interviews various thought-leaders and KCKFD staff to discuss a variety of topics, including cutting edge fire techniques and programs. Currently there are five episodes, with new episodes being recorded and released each month.

In addition to being a well-respected consultant in fire safety, Chief Rubin is also an author of several emergency service and leadership textbooks as well as chair of many fire committees. His many years of experience and leadership will give Kansas City, Kansas firefighters and the Wyandotte County community great insight, administration, and strategic planning tactics.
