On July 11, 2024, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that $20 million was awarded to communities across the country through the Innovative Water Workforce Development Grant Program.

Groundwork Northeast Revitalization Group (Groundwork NRG) has received $340,000 of this funding to invest in the NE KCK Heritage Trail that will parallel parts of Jersey Creek. The NE KCK Heritage Trail is a shared use walking and bicycling path that will connect the Quindaro Townsite to Kaw Point.

Last year, the Unified Government received $1.2 million from Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) to fund the first phase of the trail. Construction of this phase is expected to be completed in Spring 2026.
