Leavenworth Road between 67th and 72nd Streets will be closed to through traffic for at least one week, beginning Friday, July 9, 2021.

The emergency closure is in response to declining road safety conditions caused by recent torrential rains.

As part of the Leavenworth Road Modernization project, crews have been working hard to remove old pavement, storm sewer, drainage inlets, curbs, and gutter while relocating existing utility lines.

During this process, Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) and Unified Government (UG) contractors had secured the roadway with steel plates to allow through traffic to continue safely along Leavenworth road until all underground utilities were relocated.

Unfortunately, recent heavy rain has eroded the area around these steel plates and made the road unsafe for motorists and pedestrians. Out of an abundance of caution, this portion of the road has been closed by the KDOT and UG teams. Once utility relocation work is completed, crews will stabilize and re-open the road.

Motorists are encouraged to slow down, drive safely, and follow posted detour signage.
