Food Truck Moratorium at 18th & Central Lifted
Published on February 27, 2025
The temporary food truck moratorium at 18th and Central expired on February 25, 2025. Food trucks and mobile vendors may resume business in this area, provided they comply with all applicable mobile vending regulations.
The moratorium, which began on December 27, 2024, was enacted due to multiple health and safety violations, including improper grease disposal, unauthorized road closures, and fire hazards. During this time, Kansas City, Kansas Environmental Services (KCKES), a division of Public Works within the Unified Government, conducted extensive cleaning and maintenance of stormwater and wastewater infrastructure, ensuring that all sewer and drainage systems are fully operational.
To support food vendors in maintaining compliance and preventing future issues, KCKES hosted an educational session on February 26, 2025, focused on best practices for managing fats, oils, grease (FOG), and grey water. The session provided mobile food vendors with guidance on proper waste disposal and an opportunity to connect with UG departments and regulatory partners.
"Education is one of the most valuable tools in public service, and yesterday’s event reinforced that belief," said Jeff Miles, KCKES Director. "Alongside Kansas City, Kansas Environmental Services, we welcomed stakeholders from various UG departments, KDHE, K-State, and others. Their participation provided an opportunity to answer questions, foster collaboration, and align expectations moving forward. We remain committed to supporting the success of all businesses in our community while ensuring the protection of our environment."
The Unified Government remains committed to fostering a safe and sustainable environment for mobile food vendors and the surrounding community.
