K-5 Bridge Project Begins

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) will begin a bridge deck replacement project on K-5 over the Union Pacific Railroad starting Monday, May 13, weather permitting. The bridge is located just south of Sunshine Road in northern Kansas City, Kansas.

To safely complete the work, all northbound and southbound lanes of K-5 between 10th Street and Sunshine Road will be fully closed to traffic starting May 13. The bridge is expected to reopen in December 2025, with full project completion anticipated in May 2026.

Detour Routes:

Northbound K-5

  • Travel east on K-5/Sunshine Road and turn right onto Fairfax Trafficway to travel south and use the westbound I-70 entrance ramp.
  • Travel west on I-70 and use the northbound I-635 ramp.
  • Travel north on I-635 to use the northbound K-5/Leavenworth Road ramp.

Southbound K-5

  • Travel north on I-635/K-5 to exit at Horizons Parkway in Missouri.
  • Turn left on Horizons Parkway and travel north, then turn right onto MO-9/NW River Park Drive and travel east to use the southbound I-635/U.S. 69 ramp.
  • Travel south on I-635 to use the southbound U.S. 69 ramp, then travel south on U.S. 69 to use the southbound K-5 ramp

Message boards and signage have been installed to help guide motorists through the area. Traffic control will include changeable message boards, signs, channelizers, and barricades.

Clarkson Construction of Kansas City, Missouri, is managing the $12.5 million project. Work will occur during daylight hours, Monday through Friday, with occasional Saturday work as needed. KDOT encourages all drivers to stay alert, follow posted detour signs, and allow extra travel time when driving near construction zones.
