During the 2020-2021 academic year, the Kansas City Design Center (KCDC), in partnership with the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas (UG) Department of Planning and Urban Design, embarked on a project focused on the Kansas City, Kansas industrial Riverfront area from Kaw Point to 7th Street. The primary project objective was to create a comprehensive vision and urban design proposal for an inhabitable, pedestrian-oriented, and seamless public realm to reconnect Kansas City, Kansas to the Kansas River and the West Bottoms area of Kansas City, MO. The goal is to capitalize on the unique geography and create a nucleus for urban regeneration. This project offers a perspective in rethinking our industrial urban landscapes and infrastructure in creating a more inclusive mixed-use urban environment and shared public realm.

The exhibit presents the vision from research and analysis to detailed design proposals and coincides with the completion of the comprehensive project publication. The project was guided by feedback and input from the Kansas City, Kansas community, the project advisory group, and the project stakeholders and funding support was provided by HNTB and the Unified Government Department of Planning and Urban Design.
