The Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department (KCKFD) has partnered with nationally recognized production company Veer Visual to produce and launch a community campaign titled “Be the Change”. The two organizations worked cohesively on the production of six-series of multi-cultural and bilingual (English/Spanish) recruiting KCKFD videos. The “Be the Change” campaign focuses on community collaboration, educational opportunities for involved students, as well as a providing a diverse and interactive perspective into the role of becoming a KCKFD Firefighter.

Partnership Details

“Be the Change” campaign discussions started between KCKFD and Veer Visual in September of 2021, with the recordings starting in November of 2021. Initially the focus was to create production materials that would highlight the need to recruit high caliber firefighters to the KCKFD. The mission of this unique campaign also addressed the need for more displays of community collaboration, diversity, and equity within the KCKFD and the recruitment process.

The six-video series was written and produced by Director Aaron J. Monson and Post-Producer Charles R. Lutz. The project was made possible by the generous contributions of space and talent from Bishop Ward High School and Donnelly College. In addition to the 35 volunteer actors and actresses from the Wyandotte County community, there were a total of over 50 volunteers and contributors. This project was also in joint collaboration with the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department, the Wyandotte County Historical Museum, JGS Auto Wrecking and the Enola Gaye company.

“The production of the “Be the Change” video series was made possible through amazing collaboration and the hard work of many Wyandotte County citizens and organizations,” said Chief LaRwan McClaine. “This campaign not only allows citizens to view the diverse focus of our department, but it is our hope that it will also spark people’s interest and passion to successfully recruit more firefighters locally and within the region to come to the KCKFD.”

As part of this engaging partnership, Veer Visual provided one on one learning and shadowing of film and production educational opportunities for local Bishop Ward High School and Donnelly College students. These educational opportunities allow local students firsthand exposure and experience into the film and production arena.
