Chief Dennis L. Rubin Sworn in as Interim Fire Chief for KCKFD

On Thursday, June 1, 2023, the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas (UG) along with the Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department (KCKFD) hosted a swearing-in ceremony and welcome reception for newly appointed Interim Fire Chief, Dennis L. Rubin.

In attendance was Mayor Tyrone Garner, Unified Government Commissioners, many UG staff and a host of guests from the Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department, as well as community leaders.

During the swearing-in ceremony, County Administrator David Johnston provided remarks and informed guests about the interim search process and vision for securing Interim Chief Rubin.

“Our goal is to bring the best into our organization, whether it’s a full time or interim fire chief, and we found the best,” said Johnston. “Chief Rubin is eminently involved in national fire safety training in many academies and serves as a trusted consultant to many fire departments across the county. We are extremely grateful for Chief Rubin for accepting the call to lead our department during this time of change.”

Following the official swearing-in portion of the ceremony, performed by Unified Government Clerk Brett Deichler, Interim Chief Rubin provided remarks and answered questions from the audience and media.

“I am extremely excited to serve as Interim Fire Chief for the Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department,” said Interim Fire Chief Dennis L. Rubin. “With the commitment of the department and open and frank communication as well as the direct ability to be involved in most aspects of operations, I am confident we are going to be a great department.”

During Interim Chief Rubin’s first few weeks in his position, he will work to compile a Kansas City, Kansas Fire workforce assessment and will present the findings and recommendations to the Board of Commissioners at the Thursday, June 8 full commission meeting.
