A bridge deck replacement project on the northbound I-635 bridge over northbound K-5 and the southbound I-635 to southbound K-5 ramp bridge, in Wyandotte County, has resumed after a winter shutdown period.

To assist motorists during rush hours, the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) project will take place Monday to Friday from 8:30 AM to 4 PM and 7 PM to 5 AM, with work on Saturday as needed.

The bridge deck replacement project began in October 2021.

Northbound and southbound I-635 and northbound K-5 traffic will have daily lane closures. The southbound I-635 to southbound K-5 ramp and northbound K-5 to southbound I-635 ramp will be closed for the duration of the project.

Northbound K-5 will be closed to traffic and a crossover will carry one lane of traffic from northbound I-635 onto southbound I-635. One lane of traffic will remain on northbound I-635.

Detours are marked as follows:

  • Southbound I-635: Traffic will be routed south of the K-5 interchange to Leavenworth Road, then back north on northbound I-635 to the southbound K-5 exit.
  • Northbound K-5: Traffic will be routed to U.S. 69 (7th Street), south to I-70 and west back to northbound I-635. There, the signed detour will end. Traffic will use existing traffic signing to get back to northbound K-5 (Leavenworth Road) exit.

Traffic will be controlled using digital message boards, road signs, concrete safety barriers and traffic cones.

Miles Excavating, Inc., of Basehor, is the contractor for the $2.5 million project, which is expected to be completed by December 2022.

KDOT urges all motorists to be alert and obey the warning signs when approaching and driving through a highway work zone. To stay aware of all road construction projects across Kansas go to www.kandrive.org or call 5-1-1. Drive safely and always wear your seat belt.
