Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) have reached a crisis level in the United States, and Wyandotte County is no exception. Data from the recently released County Health Rankings and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) establish a clear trend of high and increasing rates of STIs in recent years. In 2018 Wyandotte County experienced an increase in rates of gonorrhea and early, primary, and secondary syphilis. Of particular concern is the fact that Wyandotte County has seen an 808% increase in early syphilis rates since 2011. In 2018 Wyandotte experienced twice the rates of chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis compared to the state of Kansas including a chlamydia rate of 898.4 per 100,000 individuals as compared to Kansas’ rate of 488.9 per 100,000.
