Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) have reached a crisis in the United States, and Wyandotte County is no exception. Data from the recently released County Health Rankings and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) establish a clear trend of high and increasing rates of STIs in recent years. In 2018 Wyandotte County experienced increased rates of gonorrhea and early, primary, and secondary syphilis. Of particular concern is the fact that Wyandotte County has seen an 808% increase in early syphilis rates since 2011. In 2018 Wyandotte experienced twice the rates of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis compared to the state of Kansas, including a chlamydia rate of 898.4 per 100,000 individuals as compared to Kansas’ rate of 488.9 per 100,000.
