Solid Waste Management

Whether you're new to the area or moving to a new place, setting up your trash and recycling service is simple. For residential customers, trash and recycling service begins automatically when you activate your water and electric utilities with the Board of Public Utilities. The 2023 monthly fee for residential trash and recycling collection is $17.00. To find out what day your trash and recycling are collected, visit maps.wycokck.org/TrashDay.html and type in your address.

If you're moving to an apartment complex or dwelling with 5 or more units, trash and recycling collection is managed by your location's property owner or property management group.

Weekly Trash Collection

Residential trash recycling is provided by Waste Management through a contract with the Unified Government that is managed by Public Works' Solid Waste Team. To find your trash day, visit maps.wycokck.org/TrashDay.html and type in your address. Keep the following in mind when placing your items at the street or curb edge:

• Put your trash and recycling out by 7 AM. Your items can be placed at the street or curb edge as early as 4 PM on the day before your normal collection day.
• Put your trash and recycling on separate sides of your driveway or walkway when possible. This helps drivers quickly identify what is trash and what is recycling.
• Trash and recycling should not be obstructed by other items like vehicles, fences, or mailboxes.
• Trash should be placed within 3 feet of the street or curb edge and stored in containers with tight-fitting lids or covers. Containers should not weigh more than 50 lbs., and they must have adequate handles for lifting. Metal barrels are not an acceptable container. Loose trash or recycling will not be collected.
• Mattresses must be wrapped in plastic for collection at the curb. Rugs must be rolled up and tied with string, and they should not exceed 4 feet long and 50 lbs.
• Loose lumber is considered construction material and is not collected during weekly curbside service. Construction waste must be taken to the Johnson County Landfill.

Weekly Recycling Collection

Glass Recycling

Residents are encouraged to recycle their glass by visiting one of the several purple Ripple Glass bin locations around Wyandotte County, KS

Recycling & Yard Waste Center: 3241 Park Drive, Kansas City, KS 66102
The Recycling & Yard Waste Center is open free of charge to Wyandotte County Residents. The center can accept items like clear, brown, and colored glass; mixed office paper, cardboard, food & beverage cans, plastics #1-7, grass clippings, garden trimmings, leaves, branches, and stumps. Visitors will need to show proof of residency with a drivers license, BPU bill, or some other document displaying their name and address.

The center is open from 10 AM to 3 PM every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, except on holidays, from:

• March 31 to November 20, and

Every Saturday from 10 AM to 3 PM, except on holidays from:

• December 3 to March 26

The center will be closed in observance of holidays on April 7 & 8, November 10, 23 & 24, and December 25.

Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Center: 2443 S 88th Street, Kansas City, KS 66111
Can't put it in the trash?  Bring it to the HHW!  The HHW is available to Wyandotte County residents free of charge.  Products accepted include auto batteries, used motor oil, brake fluid, carburetor cleaner, degreasers, gasoline & fuels, furniture stripper, glue with solvents, latex & oil-based paints, paint thinner, putty, grout, caulk & spackle, roofing tar, stain varnish & lacquer, aerosol products, drain & oven cleaners, mothballs, nail polish remover, polish with solvents, spot remover, and propane cylinders.  Only 5-gallon or less containers of HHW liquid(s) will be accepted. Visitors will need to show proof of residency with a drivers license, BPU bill, or some other document displaying their name and address.

The HHW is open from 8:30 AM to 1:00 PM on the following Saturdays in 2023: April 15, May 20, June 10, July 15, August 19, September 16, and October 21.

There are six holidays on which residential trash and recycling are not collected:

• New Year’s Day
• Memorial Day
• 4^th of July
• Labor Day
• Thanksgiving Day
• Christmas Day

On these holidays, the pickup of everyone’s trash and recycling is moved back one day unless the holiday falls on a weekend.

No one likes graffiti!  Report it by dialing 3-1-1 or visiting mywyco.wycokck.org.  If you catch someone in the act of spraying graffiti, please dial 911.  Reports of graffiti that lead to a conviction are eligible for a $250 reward!
