Today, the Unified Government Parks and Recreation Department hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony to officially open the new 18-hole disc golf course at City Park (2601 Park Dr., KCK, KS).  Many members of the community, UG staff, and community partners from Kansas City Disc Golf Club and Dynamic Discs attended this impactful event at City Park.

This addition made to the park was made possible through a grant funded by Community Development Block Grants (CDBG). With over 600 volunteer hours committed to make this course possible, it will provide free recreational fun for Wyandotte County residents and guests of City Park for many years.

"We are really excited about adding the new 18-hole disc golf course as an amenity to City Park," said Parks & Recreation Director Angel Ferrara. "Disc golf has the ability to not only activate areas of parks that otherwise go unused but also can bring in positive traffic and parks users who help take ownership in keeping our parks safe and clean.  A big thank you to Unified Government Community Development Department directing CDBG dollars to the project as well as our community partners Kansas City Disc Golf Club as well as Dynamic Discs who helped make this project possible with additional funding as well as 600+ volunteer hours spent completing the course."

This innovative 18-hole course is like none in the region, being that it offers bilingual signage throughout the entire park. In addition to the 18-hole disc golf course, the UG Parks & Recreation Department and community partners Kansas City Disc Golf Club and Dynamic Discs will focus efforts on connecting and engaging the neighboring homes and close neighborhoods of City Park by donating disc golf materials and goodies to homes.

More About Disc Golf

Disc golf is played in a manner that is very similar to golf. During a round of disc golf, the objective is to get the disc in the baskets at the end of each hole in the least number of throws possible. This is a rapidly growing sport with more than 254,700 registered Professional Disc Golf Association members across the world and there are more than 9,000 disc golf courses in the United States (USA Today, April 14, 2023). While not yet an Olympic sport, the new, free course at City Park will open up the world of disc golf for the next generation.
