Starting Tuesday, September 12, 2023, a bridge project by the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) will require the full closure of the Central Avenue bridge over I-70 and the westbound Central Avenue to westbound I-70 entrance loop ramp.

These closures are necessary for bridge pier maintenance and repair work.

During the project, which is expected to be completed in November 2023, the following will be fully closed to traffic:

  • Eastbound and westbound Central Avenue, from eastbound I-70 entrance and exit ramps to 6th Street
  • Westbound Central Avenue to westbound I-70 entrance loop ramp. Additionally, the inside lane of eastbound I-70 will be closed at Central Avenue

The following ramps will remain open to traffic:

  • Eastbound Central Avenue to westbound I-70 entrance ramp
  • Central Avenue to eastbound I-70 entrance ramp, and
  • Eastbound I-70 to Central Avenue exit ramp

Message boards and signs are being placed in the area to alert motorists to upcoming closures. Traffic will be controlled by lane and ramp closures, changeable message boards, signs channelizers, and barricades.

The contractor for the $748,000 maintenance project is R.A. Knapp Construction, of Kansas City. KDOT urges all motorists to be alert and obey the warning signs when approaching and driving through a highway work zone.
