Our County Administrator shared this reminder to UG staff as we head into Primary Election Day!

Hi, Everyone.

One of the distinct privileges of our democratic government is that the citizens get to directly vote for candidates for office.  I use the word “privilege” because the unique U.S. experiment, started with the passage of our Constitution in 1787 allowed for citizen voting, unheard at that time.  The vote for the Constitution was not unanimous, as many delegates voted “no” because the Constitution did not include a “bill of rights.”  This omission was rectified in 1791 when ¾ of the states ratified the first 10 amendments to the Constitution outlining the rights due citizens.  Today, it is still a fascinating and successful experiment!

So, for over 236 years, with some modifications, we have directly elected our representatives.  Tomorrow is Primary Day in the State of Kansas.  You and I have the privilege to influence the results of the primary election simply by voting.  I had a wise mentor tell me years ago that “if you don’t vote, you cannot complain.”  (He used more colorful language than complain.)   So, I encourage all of you to exercise your uniquely American right to vote for those seeking to represent your interests.

Another mentor of mine said “ignorance does not necessarily lead to bliss.”  To help all of you out, I have attached to this email a list of all the polling locations within Wyandotte County.  Find the polling location that serves your address and VOTE!!!

Thanks.

David Johnston, County Administrator
