On October 10, 2023, the Vernon School was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Vernon School was listed for its historic association with the education of African-American children in Kansas City, KS before the landmark desegregation case Brown vs. Board of Education.

"The National Register is the country's official list of historically significant properties, and Kansas can feel proud to have a large and growing representation of these tangible links to our past," stated the Kansas State Historic Preservation Office.

The Vernon School, constructed in 1936, is located at the corner of 27th and Sewell Streets in Kansas City, KS. Read a brief overview of this historic place here.
