The Unified Government’s Department of Public Works provides many of the basic services that impact the lives of those individuals and families who visit, live, or work in Kansas City, Kansas and Wyandotte County. Public Works provides the administration, planning, and engineering for the City's infrastructure. This includes design, maintenance, and installation of:

                                                                         
  • streets and right-of-ways
  • bridges and roads
  • all traffic control devices
  • the treatment of over 10 billion gallons of wastewater per year 
 
The Department and its various divisions work hand in hand with the Unified Government’s 3-1-1 Call Center to address a high volume of citizen concerns in a timely and efficient manner, resulting in the department’s high visibility throughout Wyandotte County. The responsibilities of the department are distributed among multiple operating units that are staffed with a trained work force of approximately 350 employees. The Department of Public Works annual operating budget is approximately $46,795,099. Operating funds are derived from a number of sources including user fees, utility charges and General Fund revenue. In addition, the department also manages a 5-year Capital Maintenance Improvement Program fund of approximately $60,000,000.
